At exactly 7:55 a.m., 70 years ago today, waves of torpedo planes, dive-bombers and fighter planes from six aircraft carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor, shattering forever the peace and isolation of an unready America.

When the bombing and strafing stopped about three hours later, 2,335 U.S. servicemen were dead, 18 American warships had been sunk or badly damaged and more than 200 U.S. planes were smoldering wrecks. Most of the casualties occurred minutes into the attack when Japanese bombs caused the battleship USS Arizona to explode, killing 1,177 sailors.

extract: "..."A Thurston County judge ruled on Friday that Occupy Seattle protesters can be evicted from the Seattle Central Community College campus, where they've been camping for the past month... The camp has been attracting people who are not part of the Occupy Seattle movement, including those who break the law and cause harm to others," Seattle Community Colleges Chancellor Jill Wakefield said in a prepared statement. "Our primary concern has been the safety and well-being of our students, employees and the campers," Wakefield said. "Public-safety and health violations have been increasing, and I'm convinced we have reached a state of emergency." Derek Edwards, the senior counsel for the state attorney general who handled the case, said the group has been attracting "a lot of homeless transients. I suspect they're a fringe element causing the problem up there... "About a month ago, the protesters moved to the college from Westlake Park, where they'd had several clashes with police. Then, just before Thanksgiving, the college board of trustees voted to ban camping on the campus. Pence filed an injunction for a restraining order on behalf of protester Patricia Sully in an attempt to stop the rule from being enforced. On Friday, Pence acknowledged that some of the college's concerns are legitimate... When the ruling was announced, Occupy spokesman Taylor-Canfield said it had been expected "because all across the country the encampments are being evicted.""
